Gold for 1st vintage of 'Les Six' at Sommelier Wine Awards

FPB155 300 dpi High ResSWA gold'Les Six', a new style of Cairanne recently released from Boutinot Rhône, has today secured Gold at the Sommelier Wine Awards 2014.

Now in its 8th year, the Sommelier Wine Awards is dedicated to the UK on trade and judged by prominent sommeliers, restaurateurs, and hoteliers. All submissions are tasted blind.

'Les Six' Côtes du Rhône Villages Cairanne 2011, part of the Fide et Arte range by Boutinot Rhône, also won a 'By the Glass' award, given to wines that are 'great on their own' as well as with food' and the 'Food Match' award for Gold winning wines judged to work exceptionally well with a specific dish.

Commenting on 'Les Six' triple success judges said 'Sweet fruit, judicious oaking, well-integrated tannins and fantastic value won this wine a spot on the By The Glass list as well as a coveted Food Match award - one of only five wines to do the double this year. Consultant sommelier Nicolas Clerc MS praised the balance and racy nature, 'earthy, truffle and bay leaf, juicy and rich palate'. Ragout, rib eye steak or puy lentil dishes were reckoned to be the ideal food matches'.

‘Les Six is, exceptionally for a Cairanne, a blend of six grape varieties which winemaker Eric Monnin co-fermented together in pairs to show how the rare and ancient varieties of Carignan Noir, Cinsault and Counoise could enhance the more popular Rhône varieties of Grenache Noir, Syrah and Mourvèdre.

Following a traditionally slow vinification, using only natural yeasts, gentle remontage and manual pigage 'Les Six' was later assembled and matured only in tronconique (large oak vats) for ten months at Boutinot Rhône’s recently refurbished cellars in Cairanne. Just 12,000 bottles were produced.

"We passionately believed we could make a new style of Cairanne from six Rhône varieties which could be stunning, but it was a leap of faith. Now we have these medals, I'm delighted that 'Les Six' 2011 has been recognised in this way by some of the world's most respected sommeliers, not only for me, not only for the team at Boutinot Rhône, but also for the Cairanne vignerons whose bijou plots of ancient Rhône varieties live and shine in ‘Les Six’ " said Eric.

Les Six’ 2011 Gold award was joined by three Silver winning wines in the Boutinot Rhône Fide et Arte range; two from the rapidly rising village of Cairanne - 'La Côte Sauvage' 2010 and 'Les Deux Barriques' 2010 - and one Côtes du Rhône Villages - ''Les Coteaux' 2011.

Further up the Rhône valley, Stephane Montez' Domaine du Monteillet Côte-Rôtie Fortis, 2010 also achieved Silver.

Both producers are represented by Boutinot, who were awarded ‘Merchant of the Year’ for  a staggering the 6th consecutive year, winning 28 Gold medals within their total haul of 131 awards.
